Christy Moore lends his support to upcoming Rally for Peace on Earth, calling on people to ‘stand together against racism’

Christy Moore has lent his support to an upcoming anti-racism rally. Moore took to Twitter to announce his endorsement of the Rally for Peace on Earth. He called on people to attend the rally and stand up “against racism, bigotry and hate”.

The protest has been organised to counter a planned far-right “Free Speech Rally”.

Over 30 organisations have backed the Rally for Peace on Earth which is due to take place this weekend, Saturday 14 December.

Standing against hate

Moore posted his support for the protest on Twitter. He asked people to “consider attending this rally”. And what’s more, he went on to say that:

We need to stand together against racism, bigotry and hate – they have no place in a civilised society.

Moore has a long history of political activism throughout his career. His song Viva la Quinta Brigada, for example, commemorates Irish anti-fascists who travelled to Spain to fight in the civil war there against the dictator Franco.

Moore also dedicated his album Burning Times to American activist Rachel Corrie. She was killed by an Israeli bulldozer while trying to stop it from demolishing the home of a Palestinian family.

“Against the forces of bigotry”

The rally has been organised by Solidarity Alliance Against Racism and Fascism (SARF), United Against Racism, and the Irish Network Against Racism (INAR). On the Facebook page for the protest they wrote:

We must at this time continue to hold the space of inclusivity and openness against the forces of bigotry, division and hate.

Over 30 organisations have come out in support of the rally. Included in the list of supporters are major workers’ unions such as SIPTU, the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO), Unite, Fórsa, and Mandate
